About Us
February & March 1522

It is thirteen years into the reign of Henry VIII. The King grows steadily more impatient with his lack of an heir, the Queen grows increasingly more desperate for a son, the decadence of the Church leads to the spread of Lutheranism... As if there needed to be more fuel added to this fire, the King has now laid eyes on Anne Boleyn, and rumor has it that he's quite taken with her.

4 March 1522 The Château Vert Pageant
A lavish masquerade is underway at York Palace. The pageant sees the ladies of the court as virtues and vices, and the King and several of his courtiers as their heroes. All are welcome to attend, as members of the pageant or the audience!

About the Palace
Although His Majesty has more than 60 houses, Hampton Court Palace is his primary residence and the most sumptuous of his homes. The palace is home to more than 2,000 permanent residents, including servants, courtiers, and the royal family, living on three floors.

Courtyards
There are several courtyards at Hampton Court Palace. The largest of these is the Base Court, just beyond the north gate. This square-shaped courtyard is boxed in by the corridors surrounding the rooms of the courtiers. Moving deeper within the palace, one comes to the inner court, allowing access to corridors near the King's chamber, the rooms of the Princess, and the closest external entrance for the chapel.

Great Hall
Decorations change in the Great Hall as befits the seasons. In the spring and summer, the high walls allow sunlight to spill in and brighten the tapestries and fresh flowers brought in from the Palace gardens. Feasting tables are often added on holidays and festivals, though otherwise the room is often left in barer conditions, the furniture pushed aside to make it a thoroughfare with only a few circular tables scattered within for people to sit, to chat, to play cards on occasion.

Galleries
There are several galleries at Hampton Court Palace, set aside for the King and the Queen separately. Two actually connect along a wide corridor that adjoins the King's rooms with those of the queen, with a smaller, private gallery each for the King and Queen, as well as a long gallery for each of them. The King's long gallery leads to the entrance to the privy gardens, while the Queen's is located behind the Chapel. Each gallery is a quiet, wood-paneled, wide corridor with paintings hung high on the walls. It's only in the last decade or two that many non-English paintings have been added, commissions coming in from the talented artists of Italy and France - to rival the commissions of Francis, of course.

Private Rooms
The northernmost gate is used for deliveries, especially those for the kitchens, and the southernmost gate is near to the latrines and used as little as possible. Those of rank arrive at the Palace by boat and enter through covered walkways. Those of high enough station are granted large, spacious suites on the ground floor, either one or two rooms, and there are two other levels of rooms as well, with servants generally housed in smaller dormitory style rooms on the third floor or the basement. Also, members of the queens' ladies, the kings' guard, and pages are usually not granted their own rooms (with few exceptions - such as the quiet but common tendency of the King to put his mistress in her own rooms).

The Chateau Vert Pageant
The Great Chamber of York Hall is filled with tapestries, great candles lit all about to lend an ethereal beauty to the otherwise stalwart interior of the palace. In the chamber, a castle has been erected - a castle within a castle. Towers rise from floor to ceiling, and banners are further flung upon the stage-castle. Torn hearts, a woman’s hand gripping a man’s heart, and a woman’s hand turning a man’s heart upside down flutter on those banners, evidence of the grip that women have over even the best of men, the power of beauty and love over all mankind. Hidden within the construct, invisible in the tower interiors, musicians play haunting music that drifts like wraiths through the smokey, dreamlike interior of the chamber.
